11/30/2008 - ABOUT ROBIN TEIGLAND

eteigland

I am an Associate Professor at the Center for Strategy and Competitiveness at the Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) in Sweden.  For more than ten years, I have researched and lectured on social networks and their relationship with strategy and performance.  In November 2008, I was awarded the "Researcher of the Year - 2008" Award from SSE for my research in this area.

Prior to completing my doctoral thesis on knowledge networking at the Institute of International Business at SSE, I worked as a consultant for McKinsey & Company in Stockholm. Additionally, I hold a B.A. in Economics with distinction from Stanford University, an M.B.A. from The Wharton School, and an M.A. in International Studies from the University of Pennsylvania.

Click here for a presentation of my interests and here for a video clip where I talk about my teaching and lecturing in the Executive MBA program (IFL) at the Stockholm School of Economics.

Here is my presentation, "Leveraging Networks for Tangible Results", as well as my presentation "Fad or Future? What do Second Life and Other Virtual Worlds Have to Offer".

Currently, I am working in several areas within virtual worlds, such as Second Life. For example, I am working with Brian Donnellan and Johan Gorecki at the National University of Ireland - Galway on a project with IBM for IRCSET (the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering, and Technology) in which we are developing a "virtual innovation system". In addition, I am experimenting with Steve Mahaley, the Director of Learning Technology at Duke CE, with the use of virtual worlds in business education. Here is our presentation: "Stepping into the Internet: Innovating Business Education with Second Life".

Our efforts in Second LIfe have been written up in the Financial Times:

1) Students take a leap into the virtual world

2) A Second Life for classrooms with vision

Some colleagues and I are Guest Editors for a special issue on virtual worlds for MIS Quarterly. Here is the Call for Papers.

Here is my avatar, Karinda Rhode, together with Ace Carson (aka Steve Mahaley) from Duke CE in the 3D version of van Gogh's Starry Night.

In November 2008, I won the "Researcher of the Year - 2008" Award at the Stockholm School of Economics. Here is Karinda making a presentation to the Corporate Partners at the Annual Fundraising Event in connection with the award ceremony.

I enjoy lecturing on a variety of subjects such as social networks, organizational change, strategy, and knowledge management at the undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels.  I am also proficient at using and teaching social network analysis. Recently I have been experimenting with the use of virtual worlds such as Second Life together with Steve Mahaley, the Director of Learning Technology at Duke CE.

As an SSE faculty member 2003-2008, I have primarily taught live cases and projects as part of SSE's MBALive component in the executive and full-time MBA programs.  (Click here for an article in Swedish on MBALive  and here for an article on SSE MBA in the Financial Times.) During the fall 2007, I was responsible for the Master Case in which I led five teams of full-time MBA students working on strategic issues for the Executive Management Team of Atlas Copco.

As a faculty member of IFL at SSE, I have run the course, Leading Organizational Change - Integrating Theory and Practice, with my SSE colleague, Dr. Andrew Schenkel, and the course, Strategy, for the EMBA program. Currently, I am running a live strategy project in the EMBA program with eZ Systems, an open source content management company.

During the spring of 2005 I taught The Uppsala Biotech Cluster, and participating firms in this live case included Uppsala BIO-X, Svanova AB, QUIAtech AB, Resistentia AB, Pharmacia Diagnostics, and GE Amersham.  During this course, the MBA students visited the University of California San Diego and the San Diego biotech cluster for one week as well as organized together with SwedenBIO a symposium on the competitiveness of the Nordic region in biotechnology.  The symposium was well attended by the public and hosted speakers such as Mads vlisen, Chairman of Novo Nordisk and Lego; Mats Pettersson, CEO of Biovitrum AB; and Dr. Christian Ketels of the Institute of Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School.  Click here for an overview of the Uppsala Biotech Cluster Master Case.

Of late, I have been extremely interested in exploring the emerging educational possibilities through virtual worlds. Much of this collaboration has been in cooperation with Steve Mahaley at Duke CE and together we have run several exercises in Second Life. Here is an overview of this work.

Additionally, I have been involved in writing a few teaching cases:

Thesis Abstract

The recently developed knowledge-based view of the firm argues that knowledge is the firm’s most valuable resource, yet as managers are discovering, valuable firm knowledge can easily leak across the firm’s legal boundaries just as it can get stuck within them.  Research on work practices has consistently shown that social relationships are an important factor in these knowledge flows (or lack of them).  However, the twist is that individuals generally form these relationships not according to what the formal organization dictates, but based on personal biases and preferences for others who may be either inside or outside the firm.  These relationships are the basis for informal, naturally occurring networks or “networks of practice”.  A tension then arises because much of the knowledge within organizations is controlled by individuals who make discretionary choices about the sharing of their knowledge, and as a result, management is finding that knowledge cannot be “managed” using the same tools that once were appropriate for dealing with physical goods.

The overarching goal of this thesis is to improve our understanding of networks of practice from a business firm’s perspective, and in particular to investigate issues of structure and performance, two important areas generally left by the wayside in previous network of practice research.  The study incorporates seven empirical studies in organizations including business firms, such as the more traditional Cap Gemini and Hewlett-Packard and the “less” traditional internet-consulting multinational, Icon Medialab; a large infrastructure project led by Skanska; and an online discussion community, consisting of U.S. lawyers nationwide. Using concepts, such as collective action, public goods, weak ties, and knowledge integration, and methods including a social network analysis of 1698 individuals across 16 countries, surveys, and case studies, this thesis supports taking a differentiated view of networks of practice over a unitary one.  For example, our results reveal difficulty in applying a common set of structural properties to all types of networks of practice and that levels of efficient and creative performance vary depending on the network of practice.

Thus, this research contributes to an expanding inter-disciplinary field that examines the creation and sharing of knowledge in organizations as a source of competitive advantage.  The results have theoretical implications for research fields such as networks of practice, social networks, and the knowledge-based view of the firm as well as empirical implications for managers striving to encourage knowledge creation and sharing within their firms.
